Weekend update
Friday night- oil changes and spanikopita, and good news for Lucia
So I went up to Albany this Friday night, after getting the oil changed on the car and stopping off at the local Greek Orthodox church for their summer festival (and loukamades and spanikopita). I checked in with my email and made sure that Lucia was going to be ok. That took a load off my mind.
Saturday- Aunt Glady, Jewelry & Medals, Garcia's and the Sage ocean.
Saturday I hooked up with Ed and we went to visit Aunt Glady in the hospital. She's not doing good. She's not been able to keep food down, partially because they give her medication and something (one or the other, or both) are making her ill.
She also knows that her body is breaking down around her. Her mind is still sharp.
Hell... she had my brother and I go to her house this weekend- me to take her jewelry, him to take our Uncle's Purple Heart medal
She's 83 and I know she's not going to be around forever, and if she's in pain and knows that her body is breaking down like this, I'm not sure I want her to continue like this. But I don't want to lose her.
So we went to Pittstown and got the jewelry and medal. In the box with the medal there are a bunch of clippings, the order for the Purple Heart (and for wounds in France on July 29, 1944), his death certificate, and we found two of Uncle Ed's campaign medals (an American Defense Service Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal).
The main things from the jewelry boxes are a locket that my grandparents had given to her (with her initials on the front and their pictures inside), a watch they gave her, and her 25 year gold watch from the Norton Company where she worked.
I wore the locket most of the weekend, and I am wearing a clauddah ring that I found. The rest of the pieces ranged from the god awful to the not so bad.
We went back to the hospital, and she told Ed a small story about our uncle. On the day he left, Grandmother Cady was making his favorite dishes, Aunt Glady was setting the table. My dad was out (and didn't make it back for the pictures they took), and she didn't say where my Grandfather was. Uncle Ed called her out to the back and told her that he was going to Europe because he didn't want the Germans to get to America and hurt or molest her and their mother, because "Soldiers don't do the right things when they're in the wrong country."
Ed and I then went and got together with Tersha and Virginia, and went to Garcia's for dinner. Afterwards, I played puzzle pirates, but on the Sage ocean with Tersha instead of my usual Midnight ocean. I have to start playing there a little more- the crew/flag she is with is cool. I have to install Ventrillo to get into the flag's chat server.
Sunday- Working out with Ed and NIN concert
Sunday, I got up and found that Ed had crashed on the couch. Which was ok, since he and I had planned to go to the gym together. That's about the only appeal that either Gold's or Planet Fitness would have for me- being able to go and work out while I'm in the Albany area.
Then Tersha and I went over to Jon's parents' house for a small birthday dinner for Tersha before running up to SPAC for the NIN concert. We missed the Peaches opener completely. We got settled in plenty of time for Bauhaus. I enjoyed their set. Then there was a break for NIN. Oh wow. Granted, I couldn't see a lot because of the people from behind us moved forward to stand in front of already established people. But what I did see was great, and the music was just... breath taking. And what I could see of the stage was a techie wet dream. They had sections of grating filled with LEDs. During the first song they all were down, creating a slight prison feel for Trent (who is very *buff* now).
During Closer (oh that song is a wet dream in and of itself), the center grate was down and they had the red LEDs flashing down, and filling up as if it was red sand filling up the grate.
The encore was Hurt, followed by The Hand that Feeds, followed by Head like a Hole.
I had a good time, other than the slight contact high that made me sleepy.
Monday- sleeping in, canceled and bumped flights
We got in really really late, and slept late on Monday morning. Thank the gods I took the day off.
I was trying my best to stay for Jon getting back to the area from his Magic Pro game. But it was looking quite grim as his first flight was canceled, then his flight from Atlanta was bumped back... but I stuck it out.
As I told Jon what was going on with Aunt Glady, I broke down a bit, into a leaking mass. (For those who don't know, leaking is when I tear up and cry when I don't want to). It took a little while to put the pieces together, and Jon did a good job as a teddy bear/support cuddler.
It also meant that I didn't get home until really late. I had to stop a couple of times, once to get caffeine, once to get a nap.
