Bitten by a bug

Or several...

Marnen and I went to the Sterling Forest Renn Faire this past weekend. Marnen was playing with Karpathos, and I tagged along. Paul/Mool asked if I could play a drum and I advised him that I hadn't really done it before. A two minute lesson later, he hands a tupan bass drum over to me and for the rest of the weekend I'm having the time of my life playing with the band. And apparently I didn't do to bad for a beginner.

And I had an absolute blast.

Granted, there were sometimes where I knew I was messing up... in fact, one piece (Rompi Rompi) I have had a hard time getting (it's in 9, broken up 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3 all even). But for the most piece, I didn't have to worry about the fact I had no music in front of me. I could just play and keep the beat while the other two drummers did the fancy stuff and just relax. Some times, I've been reluctant to play with Marnen because he's just so *good* that I feel like there's no way I can keep up. But I was able to play with a group of good musicians and have fun. In fact, a couple of times I was thinking of Wolgemut as I played, which is a good association for me.

No only do I want to play again, I want a tupan of my own.

I also want to go to the Faire again. It's a very different game then the SCA and I enjoyed myself. I'm now even thinking of what to make as a specific Faire costume and of what I'm going to wear in the meantime when I go again in a couple of weeks.

I did have a good weekend of "spot the SCAdian." I also met one at the showers. Imagine this- hot showers at 8am and I only had to wait for about 5 minutes for the line.

Marnen and I *may* have found our wedding bands. Before the weekend I looked at the web pages for a number of the vendors, and found a jeweler who does puzzle rings in sterling silver and different golds. After Marnen and I stopped at the booth, we pretty much settled on a pair of 4 band twist with a mix of metals (white and yellow gold). That's if we don't find something else that screams our names. Then again, puzzle rings seem somehow appropriate for us...

We found and purchased a sun and moon seal for sealing wax. We couldn't *not* get it, for probable use on invitations.

For a non-wedding related purchase, we have an oil candle on hold from Van Ness (?). A fellow SCAdian is working there for the season. And it's a nice blue with a pretty pattern at the top.

To find out, Paul played in a goth band some years ago and they once opened for a Cruxshadows gig. I'm bringing a mix of my CSX cds to the next weekend I'm at Faire for him to hear the newer sound. He also gave Marnen and I a cd of some gothier music he's done, upon hearing that Marnen and I were thinking of working together on some goth music ourselves. We got a chance to hear it on the way home... *drool*. It's good.

Also, to find out Veldrina, one of the belly dancers we've been playing for and who *really* likes the sound and dancibility of Karpathos, is a big CSX fan and is going to see them at Dragon*Con. The lucky woman...

We camped at the Faire. Saturday I developed a wicked migraine, so I didn't get out after dark, and Marnen had an early AM recording session so he turned in early as well.

Sunday we packed up, had dinner in Woodbury, and headed home. I picked up my car too- again, it's starting without a problem.

And I think I've gotten some bug--- tired, cold, with aching ears and a sore throat.

Going home to rest and have soup now.

Sounds like you have what Jeff had.

Possibly, but milder and with a few days of break in between. He got stuck with it all at once.
