I'm in one of those "if it's not one thing it's another..." phases.
Ragnar (
ragnarwolf)
A person I knew in the SCA passed away over the weekend--- cancer was the primary reason. He was older than me and a wonderful person. I went to the funeral yesterday. The wake on Wednesday night before would have been his birthday, at least according to the information that he has in his journal.
My trip to the wake started with following
ciaranmacleod to
gwnievere's house. Then we picked up Shevsky (sp?) from his work (and waited for him to change into his suit). Then we booked to
phoenixstarre's house in NJ and then booked down to North Bergen for the wake.
There were a lot of people at the wake. A lot of them didn't look "right" because they were SCAdians, in mundanes. And not just the mundanes you see when someone is getting to an event and hasn't changed yet, or is in the parking lot getting ready to leave from an event. Instead, we were in mundane suits and dresses.
Ragnar definitely didn't look like himself. He had lost more weight, and they shaved his face for a breathing mask and had cut his hair nice and neat.
My memory of Ragnar is of a large man with messy hair and beard and a big heart and deep voice.
Meeting Ragnar's parents, I could hear where he got the voice and his vocal style from. His dad has the same deep voice.
It was good to see people. My main thought (said several times during the wake and funeral), was "I know I missed people by not going to Pennsic, but this is not how or why I wanted to see people."
Thankfully for several people, I had my stash of clove cigarettes.
After the wake, I went with the clans over to
phoenixstarre's house for a toast to Ragnar and a little stew. I then headed back to Botoga to crash at Malcolm's house. It was good to get a chance to talk to him again.
I got up on Thursday, ended up talking a little bit with Malcolm about Dr. Who (the new series) and heading out for the funeral. I think I found the cheapest gas in the state around the corner from his house. I got to the church and sat with Jeff, Katie, and Charlie during the mass. About the only one I didn't see cry at some point during the service was Charlie and other little babies.
The ride from the church to the cemetery was long, and a little pretty. There were a couple of nice views of NYC during that ride. The cemetery service was short and quick, then a lot of us headed back to North Bergen where Ragnar's family had rented out the room of a small Italian restaunt and had a good and filling lunch served for everyone.
Then we all parted to go home.
Marnen
My beloved and over-talented fiance officially lost his job yesterday because he can't give them 40 hours a week and some idiot manager would rather lose all the work he *can* do because he can't be there 40 hrs a week. (He could commit to 30 hours a week, which is more than normal part-time.) The effective pink slip basically said, "the moment you can give 40 hours a week we can hire you back."
It's good that he has a small cushion, but it sucks that he may actually have to use it. But he already has an update interview at a consulting firm he was signed up with, and he's gotten two cold calls from recruiters after re-posting his resume.
The Computer named Jaenelle
I get home yesterday looking forward to engaging in some Diablo 2 or Puzzle Pirate stress relief, and my home computer won't even turn on. So I'm going up this weekend to visit Jon (who put the thing together in the first place) for the hardware trouble shooting and fixing (I'm more of a software tech). Mind you, the money I had for any trip like this was used Wednesday/Yesterday for going to the wake and funeral of the person in the first bullet.
But I will go insane if I don't have a running computer. Especially over a weekend when I'd otherwise be home alone.
The Door that won't Work at Work
And for the straw that was used to beat the dead camel- the outside door for the building that is nearest to my desk is busted and won't unlock/open from the outside. Again. This started back on Monday. So I ended up getting logged into my phone late 3 times this week because I had to go around the building to get in. And I was out one day this week. So that makes 3 out of the 4 days I was here.
Back up to Labor Day Weekend (that post in progress that am FINALLY finishing)
The Collection of Karpathos
First of all, the group that Marnen plays with at the Faire is called Karpathos. There's a Greek island by that name, but it can also be used to refer to the Carpathian mountain area in eastern Europe.
The main members are Paul (aka Mool in the SCA) and Scott. Paul plays a lot of instruments, usually with some sort of drone involved or played with a rhythmic continuo style (bouzouki, medieval bag pipes, viol de gamba...). Scott plays recorder and dumbek style drums, and sings. There are other members, but who plays from week to week is a changeable mix. Kazuki plays dumbek. Neel plays a specific frame drum with rings on the inside that can work as a sort of snare/tambourine, and sitar. Olyssia (I am so blanking on the spelling), is Paul's wife and plays tupan (bass drum, in fact, they owned the one that I was first handed and given the quick lesson). Marnen... is Marnen. So far he's only played violin with them as far as I know, and maybe recorder. He does keep the flute around for the rain (but there's been a couple of merchants who let us hang out and play from their booths).
Labor Day Weekend 2006 in some Detail
The musician mix for Karpathos Labor Day weekend was Paul, Scott, Kazuki, Marnen, and myself. With guest appearances by another singer named Lisa and a violinist named Sara (I think) on Sunday and Monday (respectively).
Saturday- The Faire rained out and closed at 1 pm. We played one set and that was it. So then we set up the tent in the rain while waiting for people to get together and get back and gather for recording.
This was the first time I'd seen a recording session in process. It was interesting, and they sounded good.
Afterward, the band and the recording engineer (Tristan) went to Monroe to a nice Japanese restaurant, then back to the faire to snuggle into the damp and rain.
Sunday- The day went very well. The sun came out, the crowds came in, and we were busy playing all day. Paul, Kazuki, Marnen, and I went out to dinner at a Italian restaurant that was recommended to us just south of Tuxedo. And we got back to some trouble getting back into the camping area.
Marnen and I didn't have passes. Marnen's paperwork should have been file, but the pass was never done. I was a late addition. Basically, after some time of thinking that we would have to leave and go home for the night, Tristan was able to talk to Security and we worked out a deal to get in and stay the night, and just get the paperwork done the next day.
Monday- I woke up way too early and went to IBM to work. While checking up on LJ I found out that Ragnar had passed beyond the veil. Lunch was leftover Italian from the night before. When 4 pm hit, I went back to the fair, just before the end. I met the band by the gate and played a little bit. Marnen had sorted out the pass issue (for the most part we think), so we were able to get the car into the camp area to load up and head home. We went to go to the Latin American restaurant on 32 we had found the week before, but it was closed. So we had dinner at that Mexican restaurant at the 5 Corners in Vail's Gate. The waitress was the same one that had the Stronghold crew the one night (over a month ago) when I had dinner with them. And she remembered me. As the "extra" (a term that came up for me back at that first meal I had there.
We then went home and crashed, hard.
