Highlights from the last week-
Solstice gift, a little late
marnen got me a belated Solstice/Yule gift- The Alchemy of Mirrormask...
purpura, I *have* to bring this over so you can drool over it with me.
Played in Lambertville then went to the Reading Terminal Market
This past weekend Marnen had gigs in Lambertville, NJ and Germantown/Mr. Airy, PA. So we went to Jersey on Friday night and the gig was good. The next morning one of the locals in the dance community made brunch (we had pancakes with blueberries, bananas, and pecans), then we headed down to Philadelphia and hit the Reading Terminal Market (yes again...
rombarro you have created a monster I believe...).
Marnen hadn't been to the Market in years (int the 16-18 year range he thinks), so it was familiar/new to him. We hit the Spice Terminal and picked up some olives stuffed with feta for a snack (we later grabbed a baguette from another vendor) and smoked salt for testing/experimentation. And we hit the bookstore and got the book that I held off on getting when I was at Pilcon. It's a first edition printing (circa 1949) of a collections of works by and on the Marquis de Sade.
The bakery where I got the apple dumpling last time was out of them, but in the "sell everything before we close for week" mode, so we got a loaf of strawberry bread for the dance, a loaf of peach bread for home, and a small shoo-fly pie for later (which we still haven't had, and it's Monday).
Dinner in Germantown
After this, we went to Germantown Ave. to look around and have dinner at Yu Hsiang Garden, which Marnen had been to before. Before dinner we took a look at The Melting Pot up in the Chestnut Hill area, and while it looked good, we're going to hold off on going there. And it looks like they might have a branch closer to home than the two in Phila. For dinner itself, I ordered General Tso's Scallops and Marnen ordered Shanghi noodles with vegetables and we split them for dinner. Partway into dinner Robin and Norma met up with us to have their own dinner.
Neat Refreshments at the Germantown dance
The Satruday night dance in Germantown was pretty good. My stomach was not working well the night before, so I was glad that I was able to dance. There was a lot of people there. Unlike most dances I've been to, they had refreshments at the very end. Someone made an excellent Spanish fudge with Grand Marnier and almonds... I had one tiny sliver of it and it was so good. Someone else had a hot peanut butter with jelly and crackers, the peanut butter was very good and spicy. Apparently the Peanut Butter& Co. is out of Greenwich Village, so we'll have to check them out (and get some of the hot stuff) when we're in NYC next.
Another Cheesesteak and the Franklin Institute
We stayed overnight at georgeous home of a couple of the Germantown dancers. In the morning (after home made cornbread), we headed back to Phila. Well, since it was Sunday Delassandro's was closed, so Marnen and I tried out Chubby's across the street. The steak was very good, but I think I like the sauce from Delassandros just a little more. But it was still very good.
We then hit The Franklin Institute. We're going to try to head down another time so we can hit the Bodyworks exhibit. I had fun, not having been there. I also have to get my brother there for the Train Factory exhibit. Then again, he might know more about the Baldwin 60000 than the guide in the exhibit does. There was a little paper making station and I now have some purplish paper to show for it (he can't find his). The Giant Heart Exhbit is amusing. There's an interactive section for exercise where there's a screen and 4 exercise stations (one hand pedal contraption and 3 bikes). Each station was hooked up to a character in the opera playing on the screen and to activate a character and have him/her sing you had to pedal. We were in there for hours, and were in Sir Issac's Loft/Workshop when the museum closed.
Dinner in Princeton
After the cheesesteak, and some sweets we had gotten the day before as a snack, dinner had to be a much lighter affair. We stopped off in Princeton, NJ on the way home and had dinner at JB Winberie's Bar& Grill. Dinner was a salad each. He got a Thai Chicken and Pineapple salad, and I got a chopped salad without the bacon and dressing on the side.
The weekend was good on the whole.
