So I ended up getting a few cook books over the weekend at a rummage sale. In the stack is a set of McCalls magazine cookbooks from the mid-1960s. I ended up with 4 out of what seems to be an 18 book/magazine set. I got M1- Cookie Collection, M2- Casserole Cooking, M3- Practically Cookless Cookbook, and M10- Do-Ahead Party Book. In the party book, there is a bride's cake recipe that has a fruitcake layer at the top. I've never heard of this before, but it's written of as a given for the party planner.

I'm not sure I could say it better than [livejournal.com profile] seawasp has in his journal.

For those who may not recognize the name, he was the head of Baen Books, a publishing house specializing in Sci-Fi and Fantasy. You've heard of me talk about John Ringo, David Drake, Eric Flint, and Michael Z. Williamson (aka [livejournal.com profile] mzmadmike) and their books- for example the Paladin of Shadows series (Ghost), the Honor Herrington series, the 1632-verse series, and the Freehold series- Baen Books is the publishing house who gave those to us.

I wish I had the chance to meet him and thank him.

I am currently reading C.J. Henderson's The Things That Are Not There. The main character is a detective that just found out there's more to this world than what most people see (it's a Lovecraftian/Cuthulu genre story), and he's gone to a friend who's a weapon smith. He tells the story of why he needs the fire power he does, backing it up with the slashes that the monsters left on him. The detective asks how much it's going to cost and if he has enough credit, and the guy goes "Then you have no need of credit, for you have no bill. This is not business. This is not a random thing. This is the Almighty's shadow passing over the land. I am not one to hand God an itemized tally for services. It is not wise."
