10 days, period. No optional holidays either. My bosses aren't happy about it either. So we have to work something out, but Pennsic might be partially unpaid.

Or you need to restrict the # of days you go.

I hate to say it, but a roof over your head and food in your belly *is* more important than Pennsic.

I gotta agree with this...

I'm in the process of getting a job at pennsic (see below). Actually, it's something I was looking at even before I knew for certian the # of days I had, or didn't have.

Also, I need to find out what my bosses can do for me.

*nod*
but I also have a plan to get a job at pennsic to help defray the cost of going. I'm waiting on a couple of people I contacted.

Bear in mind in planning this that the merchants are not open for the full 2 weeks.

I'm only going 1 week.

Getting a job at pennsic has several side effects. First, it adds a lot of stress, regardless of what you're doing, to what is supposed to be a vacation. Second, it doesn't pay much, so it might defray the costs but won't make pennsic free. And third, you're almost certainly making more at work than you are at pennsic. Every unpaid day you take makes that much less for rent, food, gas, etc, which no job at pennsic will recoup. So sit down and carefully go through a budget for that month with a fine toothed comb.

Plus, you don't know what time you'll need to take for your brother. Another of the things more important than pennsic is being there for family.

Make your decisions carefully, and be pragmatic. There's always next year, and even a long weekend at pennsic can serve wonders.

I would think she knows

I would think she knows all that you are stating. Some people just need what Pennsic gives them an escape. I would think you would know and understand that or am just someone that is not longer grounded in reality

Even the best people sometimes need the obvious pointed out. Remember Evil Overlord Rule #12: One of my advisors will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation.

I wasn't thinking of all the angles, for which I thank those who pointed them out to me.

I worked for Rosamund last year at Pennsic, so the Pennsic job wasn't something that intimidated me. It's the less $ for rent and other important things that I wasn't thinking of like I should have.

fuck it all

To sum up - Find out the least amount of days you can go, use the weekends wisely, look into shared travel, send tent ahead of you, pack lightly, and manage food $$ so that you don't have to cook, keep laundry $$ aside and in quarter form, budget all expenses ahead of time including shopping money.

I think you can do this. I have done it, it is possible. Just look for your priorities in what you want to do this war. Everyone understand when you can't do a lot due to life. Now we work on planning around life.
write it all down. Keeping it in your head makes for disorganization. You can do this, just keep at it!

first I have to find out how many days I have. Everyone I know going has their plans set up- and they are full week deals. I'll probably end up on a food plan somehow and I usually arrange it so that I have enough to wear until I get home. As for spending, I've done Pennsic on $150 including the non-member site fee before, so I can always go cheap on the spending $.

I think right now I'm just getting rubbed raw by the idea that my only summer vacation might be the 4 days I spent at Ed's bedside

Well, let's put it aside. Don't think about that , but think about your other options. Ok - so everyone you know is going ahead the week, then is their anyone who can take your tent? see? there is always a way. Really. Just don't focus on the bad, or that is all you will see. focus on what you can do.
check the concordia list, check out Northpass and your own frosted hills. there may be more people available than you know.

Ok, now that everything is on the table. Let's see what we can do to make this happen. I once had to be in CA on August 17th, I managed a 3 day stay with a hel of a lot of planning and some good friends. So here we go!

You have 10 days vacation. Are sick days seperate and/or spent?
How much of it do you have left?
Ignoring illnesses and/or unexpected leave what more days off do you want this year, i.e. christmas, friday of thanksgiving, etc...? Is Pennsic worth giving these up?
When do your days reassemble? i.e. when do you get more days, January 1st or a different date?
Is a 3 day Pennsic worth it? (Yes, you are talking to someone who has done that, so I know what my answer would be)
Can you hitch a ride with someone there and/or back? (While this may not save $$ on gas and tolls {if you pay gas as a car ride exchange}, this may save wear and tear on your vehicle and may help you further down the road)
If it is a 3 day pennsic (amount of days picked arbritarily) which 3 days are the most important? Use the weekends to your advantage. Return travel on the weekends are invaluable in this senario.
Speaking of, here is a senario - Take Wed., Thus., and Fri., of War Week off. Pack everything you can the previous weekend, pack the car Monday evening and leave Tuesday after work. Make sure to have plenty of caffeinated beverage of choice on hand. Make sure to leave Pennsic very early sunday, or better yet Sat. night - give yourself a few hours to recover before you have to go back to work.
Yes this is a hell of a lot of work, but I have done it and it is worth it.

Also - can you send your tent ahead with someone to have set up when you get there. I do know you are going to or just have purchased a pavillion. If this Pennsic does turn out to be such a harem-scarem 3 day jaunt, I would reccomend waiting to use that until the next big camping event. For several reasons.
1. If someone is setting it up for you, a nylon tent may be less work, and certainly less storage space in someone else's vehicle.
2. Trying out a new tent with only 3 days, is asking for disaster. We know this :)
3. You will want to work out the kinks of the new tent when you have time to do so.

About food. Either find yourself a meal plan (I don't know what your camp does) or figure out about 5$ per meal in the food court, o r think of it as 15$ perday and in your pre-Pennsic shop add in H2O and gatorade to have on deck. Note that chocolate milk would be included in your 15$ per day. Stick to this, It's about the minimum one can eat on there (yes, what I have done in the past).
At this time, throw WW out the window with the time limit, it's too much work. Work to be there, being there is the priority and walking will help with weight issues.
Don't even think about cooking for yourself or others.
1. don't want to haul cooking gear.
2. don't want the pressure of preparing and cleaning up for other people. When looking for options, think about offering to clean up for every meal eaten with others (if there is no meal plan in this senario).

On packing for a short jaunt. Leave projects at home! Yes, I said that. Projects take up precious travel space. I am sure you will find things to do while there.

Be as minimalistic on garb as humanly possible. So you wear one court garb to 3 different places, no one will fault you for it. Pack mainly light garb - cold weather may be taken care of by cloak and blankets at night. Throw in a bag of quarters, before you leave, in case you need to do laundry. Being in quarters means there's less temptation to spend the money on other things. There are washing machines on site, which by war week mean a lot of lines, but better than going off site, and if you don't need it, you have change for laundry when you return.
Budget in some shopping money in all of your monetary estimations. Don't go over board here, but you know there will be a book you want to buy there.
